Update June 2020
Past weeks I have been researching software that enables 2D drawings to be converted into 3D models. This research resulted in a selection of types of software (Feature manipulation, design, and visualization software). With this selection, a workflow has been created. Furthermore, three different projects have been selected within the Siers group that are used as case studies. Currently, the 3D models for these projects have been created and the observations are in full swing.
Proposal January 2020
3D modelling is commonly used and established in facility construction. However, the majority of subsurface utilities in practice are still mapped in 2D CAD drawings. Therefore this research aims to explore to what extent 3D models can contribute to the design, engineering and execution phase of subsurface utility projects. This research project is carried out at a medium-sized utility contractor. It consists of developing a 2D to 3D workflow, and implementing 3D models in actual performed practices of engineers.
